What is the Rainbow Calendar Project?

The Rainbow Calendar Project started in 2015 as a collaboration between Bfriend (Uniting Communities), G Mitchell Creative, and members of the local LGBTIQA+ community. It continues to showcase photographs from LGBTIQA+ community members and their families in a FREE printed calendar, distributed through various networks to reach many parts of Australia.

It started with an idea to create a calendar resource by the community, for the community, featuring photography and LGBTIQA+ specific content. The aim was and still is to produce a creative photographic exhibition and calendar, showcasing the skills and talents of the LGBTIQA+ community, while sharing our stories with many. We want to beautify walls across Australia with diverse snapshots of our lives and also share information important to the community.

How does the project operate?

This project is in three parts: a photography competition, followed by an exhibition of 24 selected photographs to be held during the Adelaide Feast Festival, and a printed calendar featuring the 12 winning images from the competition. Twelve photographs will be included in the 2022 printed calendar, to be distributed throughout Australia, and will feature with 12 additional photographs in an exhibition during this year’s Feast Festival. The top 3 images as selected by the judging panel will also each receive a prize pack.

For every photo submission, each entrant is asked to provide a short caption (maximum 50 words) in the entry form of what the photo means to you or your subject through the lens of a theme nominated by the Rainbow Calendar committee. We encourage photos to be creative and family friendly as the calendar is widely distributed in a range of locations, and the judging panel reserve the right to decide which photos are included.

Join us in creating a unique resource for the LGBTIQA community and for supporters. Look through the website for more information on how to participate… and happy snapping!

Details for the Exhibition opening and Rainbow Calendar launch will be confirmed closer to the 2020 Feast Festival, and in line with current Covid-19 social guidelines at the time.
